K Country 102.3 Names Town “Garth Brookings”

Alpha Media, Brooking’s K Country 102.3 (KKQQ) went as far as to change the name of Brookings, SD., to “Garth Brookings” for one day in order to bring the country legend, Garth Brooks to town.

In 1992, Bryan Waltz, KKQQ Content Director begged Garth’s record label for a phone interview. He was told no, but Waltz did not give up and 25 years later Garth called K Country 102.3. After that call, the station renamed Brookings, “Garth Brookings” for a day and ordered an authentic Garth Brookings population sign for the renaming of Brookings and Garth Brookings Day, September 20th, 2017.

Garth’s record label, Pearl Records found out about the sign on Friday, September 22nd and invited Waltz and his son, Kade to bring the sign to Garth and wife, Trisha Yearwood at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center in Sioux Falls.

“Garth and Trisha were fantastic and very appreciative! They sat down and had a long chat with us like we were family. The community really got involved and came to the radio station, sent in phone calls, texts and Facebook messages,” remarked Waltz.
